Enabling children to flourish and succeed

Times Tables

Being fluent with times tables facts is extremely important if children are to be successful mathematicians. The national expectation is that children should know all the times tables facts to 12x12 by the end of Year 4.

The document below provides a useful indication of when children should have learnt each times table:

The programmes of study from the National Curriculum state the year group expectations as follows:

In Year 2: Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables.

In Year 3: Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables.

In Year 4: Recall and use multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12x12.

As the children continue with their learning in KS2, a lot of the rich, interesting maths is all about the multiplicative relationships and these are hard to fully grasp without fluent recall of the tables. In 2020, the Year 4 children (our present Year 3s) will be asked to sit a Multiplication Tables Check. This check will consist of 25 questions, up to 12×12. The children will get 6 seconds from the time the question appears to input their answer on a computer. This means that children must be able to read, recall and enter their response within the given time. There will be a focus on questions from the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables. A useful link to try a similar check is www.bit.ly/2Kac6U4.

We will teach children to understand the facts but it is then really important they learn the facts by heart.  This will enable them to us these facts in other areas of Maths (such as written methods of multiplication and division).   In Year 2 and Year 6, the children will sit an Arithmetic test. In Year 4, the children will sit a Times Tables test. All these facts will be vital to enable them to be fluent when answering these questions.

The following songs are a fun way to help children to learn the times tables facts:
